"news 4 today," slushy and ice-covered roads will be a big problem if you have plans to head out. we have a crew on the road driving around so you don't have to. >> things are warming up just a bit. don't get too comfortable. >> definitely going to be a sloppy mix out there. chuck bell timing out when when the arctic air will settle in next. >> you all that stuff off the sidewalks and driveways today. temperatures will be below freezing when you wake up tomorrow morning and won't get above freezing again potentially until wednesday afternoon. another shot of seriously cold arctic air coming our way. tower camera view this morning, overcast, tryi to thin out a little bit. last of the raindrops now off the sout tip of st. mary's county. we've been dry in the metro for the last couple hours. the roads are all still a big slushy mess especially north and west where the snowfall amounts were quite a bit higher

yesterday, upwards of a foot in northern montgomery and northern loudoun county. temperatures above freezing allowing for a quick meltdown. road chemicals will be very effective. planning to go outside? temperatures in the low and mid 40s with sunshine appearing by the second half of the afternoon, as you're going out for oscar parties to night, temperatures will be back down into the 30s. again, more arctic air arrives tomorrow. the timing and the impacts of that when i see you next. >> thanks chuck. this weather is making for slick conditions on the roadways. we want to check back in with news 4's derrick ward who joins us live from bethesda who has been on the roads all morning. hi derrick. >> reporter: good morning. we are sort of off the road now. we can give you a good look at the surfaces you'll encounter. this is springfield road in bethesda -- springfield drive. if you look at it this has been plowed been passed through pretty much. it's passable be stopping can be the issue. slush is the order of the day.

look at ag den street here a plow came through here within the last five or ten minutes. it doesn't look the same as springfield, still passable but again, slush is the issue. now, of course on the roads it's a whole different story. take a look. this is the scene earlier this morning. we had a plow going out. then we caught up with someone who left their car overnight. a lot of those cars got stuck on the side of the road and prudently decided to leave them there. now is the time to dig out. we talked to a man who was just getting his car out this morning. >> you're doing a good deechltd i went to work yesterday to take care of my patients. i didn't expect it to snow much later than it did and i got stuck. >> reporter: he was an orthopedic surgeon, a doctor some of the folks that had to be on the road. even if you had to be out for good intentions of course there were good inengs it is. he finally did dig his car out and managed to get out.

he said he thinks he did some damage to it. hoe jokingly said he hoped a plow would hit it and he could get another one. fortunately that didn't happen. a lot of people digging out, still encountering slushy roads and standing water in low spots because the catch basins are blocked by the snow. watch out for pedestrians because a lot of sidewalks aren't clear. some of them will be walking in the road too. a lot of things to pay attention to if you're out, not the least of which are the road surfaces. live in bethesda derrick ward news 4. the weather is causing about two dozen closings and cancellations at schools and churches in our area. as of right now activities at fairfax, prince william and alexandria schools have been canceled. loudoun col open after 1:00 p.m. at the airports a number of cancellations and delays. reagan national reporting 40 cancellations and 29 delays. bwi, 17 cancellation, nine

delays dulles has 15 cancellations 357bd 2 delays. remember news 4 is working for you even when we're not on the air. download the nbc washington app for activity cancellations and weather advice ris. it's free and so easy to use. two people are recovering from a shooting in d.c. police say just before 2:00 a.m. a woman was shot in the face and a man was grazed by a bullet on elvins road. we're workiheir condition right now. developing this morning, this is out of our nbc station in new york we are learning more about a horrific murder suicide. just north of new york city a recently retired police officer killed his two teenage daughters and then killed himself. the girls were reportedly 18 1357bd years old. one of their schools is holding grief counseling. this is just a few hours from now. we're told the father had been an officer with the force for more than 22 years. this morning a man is in jail accused of shooting a police officer in minnesota.

the minneapolis officer and his partner were responding to a call for a burglary and domestic assault. they were standing by their squad car when a man opened fire hitting one of the officers. the officer was taken to the hospital. police arrested the suspect. right now rescuers are looking for survivors of a deadly ferry crash near bangladesh. we learned 31 people including at least one child have died. another ship we're told hit the ferry which capsized with about 100 people on board. at this point it's hard to tell how many more are missing because many ferries don't keep formal passenger lists. if you were on at which time they are morning, you may have seen a picture that looked like a d.c. streetcar was on fire. smoke was coming off of it and we called police who told us at. we're working right now to get permission to show you the picture. police say no one was hurt. this morning metro looking into two cases of smoke at stations. a train malfunctioned and forced everyone out of the woodley park

metro station on the red line. people on the metro say they heard a small explosion, then saw smoke billow around them. firefighters were called. everyone got out safely. investigators also say a maintenance issue outside the foggy bottom station caused smoke. this caused major delays. no one was hurt. metro says no trains were involved there. we're looking at 10:06 right now. bao bao is coming up on a milestone. how the baby panda is coming into her o.
